Happy 4th of July...See you all next week!

"We have enjoyed so much freedom for so long that we are perhaps in danger of forgetting how much blood it cost to establish the Bill of Rights." Felix Frankfurter

God Bless America, Land that I love. Stand beside her, and guide her Thru the night with a light from above. From the mountains, to the prairies, To the oceans, white with foam God bless America, My home sweet home.

This is my story

My family story is like many others. My parents lived through the chaos of the Vietnam War even though they lived in the small neighboring country of Laos. My father and many others took their families to live in refugee camps in other neighboring countries. We ended up in Ubon, Thailand. The travel across the mountains was harsh with 3 young boys. My mom recounts the friends she saw laying dead on the side of the path who were killed or stepped on a mine. They had no time to bury them and could only move on.

My father, like many men, fought in the jungles against the Vietcong and many were happy to have the American Military there in SE Asia. America represented Freedom, something that communist do not believe in. We lived in the refugee camp for several years and my father went back and forth between Laos (where we had family still) and Thailand. He was gone so much he was a stranger to my two youngest brothers.

One day my father decided he wanted to try for 1 more child, he wanted a girl. My mom was skeptical because life was hard since she was raising 3 boys on her own already. However, my mom became pregnant and somehow, my father would get his wish.

My mom was 3 months pregnant when my father was killed in an attack. Luckily, she was able to retrieve his body and give him a proper burial. Now a widow with 3 young boys and a baby on the way, what was she to do? She decided that if she had another boy, she would give the baby up for adoption and found a couple to adopt the baby.

My mom said that while she was at the refugee hospital, my oldest brother Padith, was waiting outside with the couple (who wanted the child) and was harassing them. He did not want mom to give up the baby. Luck would be on Padith's side and my father's wish came true. My mom gave birth to ME and she knew that I was a keeper!

My father's death was a blessing in a disguise. My mom was now a widow with 4 young children and survived with the help of French Priests who were there in the camp with us.

We would make plans to leave Thailand for a permanent home elsewhere. Refugee Camps are temporary & going back to Laos was not an option since we had left a communist country.

We would arrive in Traverse City, MI on May 20, 1980. We were sponsored by the Presbyterian Church in Traverse City. My mom remarried when I was 3 1/2 yrs old and they are still together. My stepdad is dad and grandpa to all the grandkids. He also fought in the jungles of Laos. His greatest story is when he spent 6mths in the jungle, ate what he could & survived 2 gunshot wounds.

Like many others, my mom had to leave her entire family and her mom &1 sister has since passed away. She has never been back to see them, but we hope to in the next 2 years to see the family we have left. I have to say that I can't believe that my mom now has a cell phone number for her sister...isn't that crazy? Laos is coming around.

When I was up in TC after Memorial Weekend, my mom pulled out a scarf. She never showed it to me and I don't know why she never showed it to me before. The scarf is the only thing we have left of my father, she had to sell his belongings before we left for the USA. It was weird to touch it knowing my father once used it. We only have 1 pic of my father taken with his entire family a few months before he died. When I can find a copy, I'll post it.

The moral of the story is be proud of your country. Don't forget what it took and still takes for Americans to have the freedoms and rights we have. Though I wouldn't change my life, I look forward to meeting my father one day and my mother in law (she died of breast cancer when Pete was 8yrs old).

A few pics.

We celebrated my 28th b-day with a dozen long stemmed roses, cute cards, dinner at Applebee's (Kiersten's first outing since she was a baby baby & she did awesome) & cake after dinner. Unfortuntely Kiersten fell asleep on the car ride home. We also went shopping on the weekend & I picked up a few items from Express.

Kiersten hanging out under the tree at the park taking a drink.

Last Friday night at the mall. Mommy, Gimmme the camera!

Yep, I'm walking and running ALL over the place now.

Kiersten HATES hats. She will tear any hat we put on her off. Luckily, I'm not a fan of hats.....I'm a shoe fan and she will be too!

Record-Eagle/Tyler Sipe Justin Nguyen appears before Circuit Judge Philip E. Rodgers Jr. Friday afternoon at the Grand Traverse County Courthouse. Nguyen pleaded guilty to two charges stemming from an April 27 car crash that killed three local teens.
TRAVERSE CITY — A local teen faces prison time after accepting responsibility for a crash that killed three Traverse City students along a busy road.
Justin Jason Nguyen, 18, of Traverse City, on Friday pleaded guilty to one count of causing death without a license and a count of involuntary manslaughter, both 15-year felonies, before 13th Circuit Court Judge Philip Rodgers.
Nguyen was driving on South Airport Road April 27 when he lost control, sped across three lanes of traffic and crashed into a delivery truck.
Passengers Phougheune Siphengphet and Davy Koumliene, both 16, and Dath Keovongkoth, 17, all of Traverse City, were pronounced dead at the scene.
A female passenger, Bao Hang Nguyen, received minor injuries.
Justin Nguyen was charged with three felony counts of causing death while operating a car without a license; three misdemeanor counts of negligent
homicide; and one count of being a minor driving with alcohol in his system.
Nguyen responded quietly as Rodgers went through the elements of the crimes and asked questions about the crash as members of Nguyen's family and the victims' families watched.
"Prior (to the accident) you had consumed an intoxicating beverage and were weaving in and out of traffic at a high rate of speed?" asked Rodgers.
"Yes," Nguyen said.
"You acknowledge your behavior was grossly negligent?" Rodgers said.
"Yes," Nguyen responded.
As part of the plea deal, Grand Traverse County Prosecutor Alan Schneider said Nguyen had to accept responsibility for all three deaths, although he pleaded guilty to two felony counts.
Attorney Jeffrey Slocombe refused to comment about the plea deal as he left the courtroom with members of Nguyen's family.
Nguyen will be sentenced on Aug. 4.

IT'S A SUPER SPECIAL DAY!

IT'S MY 28th BIRTHDAY TODAY!!!!

I am so tired, well we all are. We had the kids up in our bedroom last night. Kiersten slept on the floor with Pete & Peter in the bed with me. We wanted them in one location in case we had to go hide out in the basement due to the storms/tornado watch we pretty much had all day into the night. The thunder also scared Kiersten since we had them all day & I didn't want her freaking out in her room by herself. Peter would have found his way up into our room, sometimes we find him on our floor in the morning anyway.
I fell asleep about 12:30am last night & woke up about 5:00 am. Kiersten has been up since 4 am and so has Pete on and off. Kiersten fell asleep around 10:45pm last night so she will be cranky pretty soon! Pete ran to McD's & got us breakfast so I could relax this morning. Bath time is just around the corner and we will be going to the mall soon to hang out since it is very wet outside and I like to get out as much as possible!
Have a great day!

Good News!

Pete got a promotion! He started as an intern/trainee as a level 89 and is now level 93 which is management. Level 93 is a pretty tough level to get to so we're happy.

Anyway, he begins his new job officially July 1st. He will be a procurement and supply specialist working with the buyers (which he is currently) and engineers on the Wrangler and other trucks. He recently purchased seats for the Trucks, Jeep and now the minivan.

The great thing is the increase in his salary. The bad part is that his office will move from headquarters in Auburn Hills to Detroit at the Jeep Truck Engine Plant where they build the prototype vehicles...mainly an engineer hub. He will be driving a lot back & forth it sounds like btwn Detroit & Auburn Hills. It will be closer for him to commute to school at night in Ann Arbor though. I will just worry about the area, but you can't have it all. A promotion is a promotion! Yeah Pete!

P.S. check out the rose...after 2 yrs of planting them, we are finally getting a nice crop. This is a yellow with a pink tint one.

Father's Day Part 1

We had a rather large breakfast....pancakes, eggs, sausage, bacon, apples, strawberries and cherries. The kids & I gave Pete a few small gifts, a handmade father's day card & picture/frame.

Then we went to Indian Springs Metro Park & played at the Spray 'n Play area. Its a huge padded area with sprinklers. It was a bit cooler and windy, but still a lot of fun.
Kiersten's about to be blown away.
One of my fave pics. Too darn cute!
Peter running around like crazy!

Father's Day Part 2

Trying to get Peter to stop for a sec to take a pic, but he was too busy playing.
The kids are quickly outgrowing me!
Kiersten practicing her walking skills with Daddy's help.
Her first seesaw ride.
Lots more fun!
A father & daughter hug & kiss
Kiersten enjoying a little swinging
Playing Soccer & Frisbee
All Done. Time to leave the park since it was getting ready to rain.

More pics from Fri & Sat

Here are a few more pics from Friday night. Peter moves too fast & doesn't like to pose for a pic when he is in the middle of playing.

For some reason, she will go into this pose anywhere anytime. When I'm in the kitchen cooking, I'll look down & there she is in this pose. Daddy's Here!!!

Saturday morning...waiting for Daddy to mow the lawn. It was really warm so we stayed in most of the day.

Around 4:30 p.m. we went & played in the sprinklers.

We spent Friday trying to capture that perfect pic for Daddy's Day!

Here are a few pics I could post. I tried throughout the day & still having some issues.
Kiersten is our little wrestler. She will tackle Peter & take him down. Of course, Peter is gracious enough to take the beating from his lil sis.
Goofing off again! Nothing new here.
Ewww....dirty diaper smell. All of Kiersten's poopy diapers go in a lil trash can outside. Someone is getting tired!
Score! The perfect goofy shot that we used in a homemade pic frame that we gave to Daddy on Father's Day.

Then we met Pete up at the mall after work. While we waited forPete to arrive, the kids played.

Because Pete works a lot (10-12+hrs a day) slaving away for DCX, the kids get super excited when he comes home. I tell them, Daddy's home!" and they make a beline for the open window. Kiersten's squeals can be heard outside. I know this is Pete's fave part of the day. I usually try to sneak away for a short time to finish dinner or just get away. Somehow I always get found by Peter.
We don't put hats on Kiersten because we like to show off her hair & she doesn't like hats on & will pull it off anyway.
The bath time pic I had a HARD time loading.

Here are some pics blogger let me load.

I like to eat my bath toys.
We were up north (Traverse City) for 5 days Wed thru Sunday following Memorial Day Weekend. My brother also came up with his family from Chicago. Pete, Peter & I caught one of my nephew's soccer game. He is the goalie...he's kinda big & slow so it works out well he is the goalie. Calvin is 9yrs old, almost 5ft tall and at least 110lbs (he's heavier than me!)

Right after this pic was taken, Kiersten slapped cousin Dianne.
Poor Dianne was a little under the weather.
We just love pig tails on our beautiful little girl (being fed by grandma, its only asian food at my parent's home)
We were at cousin Susan's home last Sunday for her daughter's high school graduation party. From left to right...Aunt Joyce, cousin Debbie w/daughter Jessica, Cousin Keith (debbie is his wife) holding Peter, Pete & Kiersten, Cousin Paul and his wife Mary. Susan(not pictured) and Paul are 2 of Aunt Joyce's kids. Keith is Aunt Carolyn's son (Carolyn is Joyce's younger sister) who was not able to make it b/c Uncle Ron is still in the hospital.
Okay, I look a little weird ( was staring right at the sun) and getting used to wearing contacts again. I stopped wearing contacts Oct 2003 b/c I developed a cornea ulcer in each of my eye and was close to losing my eyes~very scary. Don't you just love the property!! The house is really beautiful too!
Peter practicing his scoccer skills with his 3rd cousins & some friends.
Peter playing a little t-ball with daddy.
